How do you find clarity?

How do you find clarity?

At times I can feel that my head will explode with all the work I have to do or a massive decision I need to make. I feel overwhelmed, foggy and out of control. I have now recognised that this happens when I have too much going on, and I am about to take big shifts in my business and in my life. So finally, after years of wishing this feeling would go away, I have learnt to embrace it and solve it. Confident in the knowledge that there is a big shift out there soon. Let me share with you how I find clarity from a dazed and confused state. 1.   Trust that this will pass One thing I have learnt over the years is that nothing is forever, no matter how Groundhog Day-ish it seems. Trust that this overwhelm and confusion will pass, especially when you give it a nudge. Knowing that something is finite instantly starts to make you feel more in control. 2.   Do a brain dump Our brains are fabulous pieces of equipment but they can sometimes do more harm than good. If your issue is swirling around your head at 2am every morning, robbing you of precious sleep time, then do a brain dump. Simply take a piece of paper or your tablet or computer and firstly, draw two lines down the middle of the page so you have two columns. Then write down everything that is even remotely connected to the issue that is clouding you on the far left hand column. This may take 10 minutes or 2 hours....

Thrive TV Tip ~ Does selling turn you off?

Thrive TV Tip ~ Does selling turn you off?

Tell me, how do you really feel about selling? [new_line] Do you love it, or does the thought of asking for the order, closing the deal and squeezing the sale fill you with dread???[new_line] You are not alone! Many people I know dread selling but realise it is an essential part of their business. When you think of selling is the next logical step for someone to take with you, it takes away the dread, and the sliminess…[new_line] I like to think of marketing and sales as part of a continuum… the KNOW  –  LIKE   –  TRUST  –  BUY   continuum…. [new_line] Think about how you buy a service. First of all you have to KNOW about that person or service. Then you have to LIKE them and then you need to build up TRUST. Only then will you buy from someone. [new_line] So if you spend time building up the know, like and trust part of your marketing, the conversion to a sale will be much easier and the next logical step for someone to take with you. [new_line] Your Action: Review your marketing – are you opening with enough time and effort to increase the know, like and trust factor in your prospects before you ask for the order? Take some time to review. [new_line] Let me know how you get on![new_line] Would you like a weekly burst of momentum delivered straight into your in box? Women At The Top? – Not in Corporates

Women At The Top? – Not in Corporates

Last night BBC 2 provided us with some gripping television which is a major feat considering the Paralympics are grabbing the viewing audience. Hilary Devey, a British multimillionaire entrepreneur, presented a programme called “Women At The Top.” Designed to discover why there are so few senior women in UK corporates. And a severe lack of women at the top. It was a great programme but it reminded me of the superficial presentations we all get a company induction day, that day when, after we start at a new company, all new recruits sit through hours of powerpoint presentations in a stuffy room having one manager after another show vision statements,  organisation charts and strategy slides in an effort to educate us about the business. And we learn about the business but we are never told the real nitty gritty of how the organisation really works, and how you need to behave to fit in and be a success. Women At The Top was a little like that. It did a great job in raising the issues and informing us of the reality of the inequity between the genders as the seniority of the positions changes. It gave brilliant examples of how women and men operate differently in groups and at the workplace. It showed how Proctor and Gamble examined the productivity of its project teams based on gender, and found that those with an equal balance performed 5% more effectively. And when your profit is close to $9 billion, a percentage point can make a massive difference to the dividend return. So why do I think it could have gone...
What business support do you need?

What business support do you need?

I have been so fortunate in the past few weeks to speak to over 30 Corporate Crossovers. These women have taken their valuable time and shared their story with me. I have heard all about their transition from corporate employee to business owner. Why they left and how it has been for them since. This is all for my new book coming out soon! The key theme that keeps on coming through from them, and the 300 Corporate Crossovers I surveyed earlier this year is the need for support. Support for them as they go through that transition from being a corporate employee in that framework to launching out on their own. Support as they grapple with the multitude of things that need to happen to get the business from concept to reality. Support as they learn to sell themselves, their ideas to new markets. And as they learn to value themselves and their time and put a price on it. And business support as they realize that maybe the actual performance of their business is different from their business plan. And support when it gets tough, when they’re tired from the long hours, feeling fragile from rejection and yet still persevere because they are so passionate about their idea and determined to make it a success. If these statements resonate with you – where are you getting your support from? The women I have spoken to find support from: partners and family close friends other business owners mentors coaches some networking groups (not all…so check carefully) b0oks and courses As we are all so individual, I urge you to...
Thrive! TV Tip ~ What is your biggest business asset?

Thrive! TV Tip ~ What is your biggest business asset?

Years ago I was Brand Manager for Colgate Toothpaste. Our offices in New Zealand were directly over the factory. Every week we would have a meeting with the production staff to check on how production was going. Invariably this would include a discussion about the state of the toothpaste machine. If the toothpaste machine wasn’t producing toothpaste, we didn’t get sales. It was one of our business’s most important asset. When we run our own business, we are that toothpaste machine. Without us, our businesses wouldn’t be here. So take a moment, watch this week’s TV Tip and consider how well are you looking after your most important asset? Missing your paid holidays?

Missing your paid holidays?

At this of year in the Northern Hemisphere, our thoughts turn to the long stretch of summer ahead of us. For those of us in the UK, we are all probably aching to go somewhere sunny and rain free for a long, long time! (for those of you not in the UK, we have seen a whole lot of rain…..) Yet, here is often where having our own businesses can be the double edge sword. We have all the flexibility we want, as it is our business, and yet for many of us, unless we are working we don’t get paid. And this is when we can reminisce fondly of our time as an employee……. So what to do? Well, you could always go and get a job but I know that’s not an option as you love the freedom ad flexibility of your own business. So try this planning and calculation instead..I call it the My Holiday Time Breathe Easy Calculation! Step 1: As you plan your year in broad strokes, plan those weeks you will take out as holiday. Then calculate the number of working weeks you have left. Step 2: The divide your ideal annual income by those remaining working weeks. This number will then become the income you need to achieve for those weeks you are working. Doing this calculation and achieving this target will mean that you are paying yourself while you are on holiday! Of course, it may mean you need to step up and grow your business by 20% but won’t that peace of mind be worth it? If you need help...
