Women Entrepreneurs At The Top – I’m Still Hungry

Women Entrepreneurs At The Top – I’m Still Hungry

Watching the concluding episode of BBC 2’s Women at the Top with the fabulous Hilary Devey, I felt unsatisfied. A bit like the feeling you have after a Chinese meal. You feel full as you stand up from the circular rice covered table, but then hours later you are rummaging in the fridge for something else to eat. (Or is that just me??) Last night, Hilary and the production team at the BBC did a wonderful job of exposing us to innovative employers who think differently about how they can provide flexible working for their employees and cost effective and convenient childcare. These are fantastic places to start and I am sure would encourage more women to stay longer and work their way to the top. Or would it? I still don’t think the ultimate issue of corporate culture has been addressed enough. Why is it that smart, ambitious women who have their home lives organised to enable them to have a career still decide to leave? Yes, I know from my research that for those who are mothers, the flexibility of running their own business is appealing. And I also know from that research that these bright, ambitious women get fed up. They don’t want to play in this sandpit anymore, growing tired of the games and politics needed to elbow their way to the boardroom table. Here we have a conundrum, or do we need to be more patient? Do we hope that the innovative flexible working and child care solutions exposed last night do the trick, as more employees are exposed to this new way, that...
Thrive! TV Tip ~ What is your biggest business asset?

Thrive! TV Tip ~ What is your biggest business asset?

Years ago I was Brand Manager for Colgate Toothpaste. Our offices in New Zealand were directly over the factory. Every week we would have a meeting with the production staff to check on how production was going. Invariably this would include a discussion about the state of the toothpaste machine. If the toothpaste machine wasn’t producing toothpaste, we didn’t get sales. It was one of our business’s most important asset. When we run our own business, we are that toothpaste machine. Without us, our businesses wouldn’t be here. So take a moment, watch this week’s TV Tip and consider how well are you looking after your most important asset? Missing your paid holidays?

Missing your paid holidays?

At this of year in the Northern Hemisphere, our thoughts turn to the long stretch of summer ahead of us. For those of us in the UK, we are all probably aching to go somewhere sunny and rain free for a long, long time! (for those of you not in the UK, we have seen a whole lot of rain…..) Yet, here is often where having our own businesses can be the double edge sword. We have all the flexibility we want, as it is our business, and yet for many of us, unless we are working we don’t get paid. And this is when we can reminisce fondly of our time as an employee……. So what to do? Well, you could always go and get a job but I know that’s not an option as you love the freedom ad flexibility of your own business. So try this planning and calculation instead..I call it the My Holiday Time Breathe Easy Calculation! Step 1: As you plan your year in broad strokes, plan those weeks you will take out as holiday. Then calculate the number of working weeks you have left. Step 2: The divide your ideal annual income by those remaining working weeks. This number will then become the income you need to achieve for those weeks you are working. Doing this calculation and achieving this target will mean that you are paying yourself while you are on holiday! Of course, it may mean you need to step up and grow your business by 20% but won’t that peace of mind be worth it? If you need help...

Thrive! TV Tip ~ Feeling lonely? Reach out and connect!

Thrive! TV Tip ~ Feeling lonely? Reach out and connect!

This week’s Thrive! TV Tip speaks to a real issue that I had when I first set up my own business. I was lonely. Yep, in a city of 10 million people, I was feeling very alone, isolated and cut off from the ‘real’ world…i.e. my old work mates and all the social support they gave me. I had to do things I had never done before – join groups of people who I thought I might like and share my values. having worked for a long time in a job, I was an absolute stranger to networking groups. But over time I found my new work mates and started to thrive! I wish you the best on your journey to connect. I would love to know what your experiences have been and what has worked well for you.
