Start Your Thinking From Where You Want To Be

Start Your Thinking From Where You Want To Be

I have just got off from my Monthly Accountability Group I lead with a fantastic group of clients. Each month a common theme emerges, something that we all need to learn. This month we were discussing energy, problem solving and achieving goals –fairly typical for any mastermind type group I know. The shift came when I paraphrased a quote; “We can best solve our problems when we try and create a solution from where we want to be, not from where we are now”  << click to tweet! The beauty in this approach is that our thinking changes to be more solution focused. We start to think about how we have already achieved what we wanted, and what steps we have take to get there. We become more mindful of opportunities and accomplishment. Viewing our problem from where we are now reinforces the issue and commonly we use the same thinking to solve the problem that created it in the first place. Result? There is no result – just more frustration and stalling. So, if you have an issue that is preventing you from moving forward, move your thinking. Start to imagine that you have already solved the issue, and achieved what you wanted. What steps did you take to get what you wanted? What happened? Imagining that you have already achieved your outcome makes finding the solution so much easier. I would love to know how you have applied this approach! Let me know...
Missing your paid holidays?

Missing your paid holidays?

At this of year in the Northern Hemisphere, our thoughts turn to the long stretch of summer ahead of us. For those of us in the UK, we are all probably aching to go somewhere sunny and rain free for a long, long time! (for those of you not in the UK, we have seen a whole lot of rain…..) Yet, here is often where having our own businesses can be the double edge sword. We have all the flexibility we want, as it is our business, and yet for many of us, unless we are working we don’t get paid. And this is when we can reminisce fondly of our time as an employee……. So what to do? Well, you could always go and get a job but I know that’s not an option as you love the freedom ad flexibility of your own business. So try this planning and calculation instead..I call it the My Holiday Time Breathe Easy Calculation! Step 1: As you plan your year in broad strokes, plan those weeks you will take out as holiday. Then calculate the number of working weeks you have left. Step 2: The divide your ideal annual income by those remaining working weeks. This number will then become the income you need to achieve for those weeks you are working. Doing this calculation and achieving this target will mean that you are paying yourself while you are on holiday! Of course, it may mean you need to step up and grow your business by 20% but won’t that peace of mind be worth it? If you need help...

Vision Boards and The Brain!

Vision Boards and The Brain!

Coming back to work (my own business) after my father died suddenly has been really hard. I have travelled home to London from New Zealand and after six weeks away, feel dislocated from my normal life on London. As a coach and mentor I am supposed to motivate others and help them achieve goals but now the last thing I feel like doing is that, or even doing it to myself. Then it clicked……what tool in my large tool box can I use to boost my flagging spirits and help me recapture energy and motivation to what I know I really want to be doing? It was, of course, my vision board. That personal and inspirational collection of images, words and colours, that when I created it 6 months ago defined where I wanted to go. Before all of this, every time I looked at it, I felt uplifted, on purpose and ready to get going on the next task at hand! Even thinking about my vision board as I write starts to lift my spirits. But why? From a neuroscience perspective, vision boards work as follows: When you are creating it and choose images that ‘feel’ right, you are accessing your subconscious. As you may know, it is the subconscious that drives our thinking much of the time Chances are your vision board makes you feel different. You probably feel happier, motivated, inspired or something similar. When you feel these emotions you are releasing a burst of oxytocin and dopamine into your brain – ‘feel good’ neuropeptides. These will help to energise you and get you into action...
