Do you have what it takes to be a success in your business?

Do you have what it takes to be a success in your business?

Deep into the second week of writing my book about Corporate Crossovers I am discovering some key themes about what has made them successful. Successful in their terms of living their values, creating an environment they love to work in and feeling in control of their destiny. And making decent money.   So far the themes that keep repeating themselves are: passion determination perseverance Passion about their product or service. Determination to make a success of their business. Perseverance to get the result they want, to push open closed doors and not take no for an answer the first, second, fifth or even the tenth time. If you were to rate yourself on these three qualities, where would you score? What needs to shift to get the success you want for your business? Let me know below how you fare, I would love to know!...
How to be cruel to be kind

How to be cruel to be kind

“There aren’t enough hours in the day” If I had an ounce of gold (shoring myself against the currency….) every time I heard this statement from my clients, I would have enough gold to underwrite a small nation. It’s time to be cruel to be kind. By catering to everyone elses’ timetables, whims and needs ahead of yours means that you lose. YOU LOSE! Your business loses. If you want to feel more in control of your time, your energy and have your business flourish you need to start pushing back, set boundaries and put yourself first! This may seem a little harsh in it’s tone but if you aren’t passionate and determined about setting boundaries for yourself so you do the work on your business, you will fail. Step up now and make changes to how you manage your time. Treat yourself as your most important customer and make those appointments with yourself to do the work sacrosanct. Let me know your thoughts and tell me how you are pushing back!...
Missing your paid holidays?

Missing your paid holidays?

At this of year in the Northern Hemisphere, our thoughts turn to the long stretch of summer ahead of us. For those of us in the UK, we are all probably aching to go somewhere sunny and rain free for a long, long time! (for those of you not in the UK, we have seen a whole lot of rain…..) Yet, here is often where having our own businesses can be the double edge sword. We have all the flexibility we want, as it is our business, and yet for many of us, unless we are working we don’t get paid. And this is when we can reminisce fondly of our time as an employee……. So what to do? Well, you could always go and get a job but I know that’s not an option as you love the freedom ad flexibility of your own business. So try this planning and calculation instead..I call it the My Holiday Time Breathe Easy Calculation! Step 1: As you plan your year in broad strokes, plan those weeks you will take out as holiday. Then calculate the number of working weeks you have left. Step 2: The divide your ideal annual income by those remaining working weeks. This number will then become the income you need to achieve for those weeks you are working. Doing this calculation and achieving this target will mean that you are paying yourself while you are on holiday! Of course, it may mean you need to step up and grow your business by 20% but won’t that peace of mind be worth it? If you need help...

External Clutter Holding You Back?

External Clutter Holding You Back?

An unexpected repair to our kitchen ceiling has meant me completely clearing out my home office so the builders can lift up the carpet in my office and repair from the top down. Everything, yes, everything had to be moved out while the repairs take place. As I shifted my files, course notes, books, journals, inspiration cards and vision boards from to the spare room, I started to think that this was the perfect opportunity to have a late spring clean. My business and my thinking about it has evolved significantly over the last six months yet as I shifted all my stuff, I realized that my belongings didn’t reflect this. Even with the carpet up, my office looks clean and expansive. I feel like I have been given a great opportunity to start afresh in a new space. In fact I am even looking forward to restocking my office and having a purge of the old stuff that no longer reflects the business I’m in. I wonder how is your external environment reflecting where you are with your thinking about your...
What I Learnt from Four International Women’s Day Events

What I Learnt from Four International Women’s Day Events

Attending four International Women’s Days events last week in London was an incredible opportunity to listen, learn, reflect and discuss the issues and keys to success for women in business today. I attended the outstanding Women Inspiration and Enterprise Symposium, an intimate and inspirational Islington Chamber of Commerce Women in Enterprise event, an exuberant Women Unlimited Annual Conference and then a very stylish and chic Woman in Business Brunch. Speakers I watched ranged from Dame Vivian Westwood, Ariadne Founder Julie Meyer, Lynn de Rothschild, Muks founder Jaime Cooke, and vegan cupcake and bakery owner Ms Cupcake. Across the International Women’s Day events I watched over 30 successful women business owners speak about how they succeeded and in some cases almost failed, then succeeded again. Distilling the lessons from their stories, it was evident there are three traits all of them shared which enabled their success. The common traits all of them share are; Focus Mindset Perseverance 1. Focus What are you trying to create? What is the vision for your business and how will you impact your customer? All speakers spoke about their commitment to their vision of where they could see their business would be in the future. By having a clear vision, this enabled them to stay focused on the core business idea and do one thing brilliantly. Whilst tempted, they realized that shiny new toys, and left field opportunities would dilute their focus and thrust behind the original idea. Related to that focus is also the choice that these women made about what type of business they wanted. Did they want a lifestyle business, offering flexibility,...
