An easy way to get focus

An easy way to get focus

As all my clients will attest, I do love business plans! Yet, even with the most rigorous plan in place to grow your business, sometimes our motivation can falter. When you start a business, your verve can be diminished by any number of factors; feeling overwhelmed by all the tasks to complete, sales seeming a long way away, isolation of starting up. And if you are growing an existing business, your motivation can falter by feeling stale, tired of doing the same old thing with seemingly limited results. After more than a decade of running my own business, I have found the most effective way to keep my zest and verve in my business is to be crystal clear on what I want to achieve – beyond the numbers. As I sit down to create my business plans, before I reach for a calendar or calculator, I take a moment to pause, and ponder. I then ask myself “what three words describe what I want this year?”. Writing what ever words come into my mind, I imagine what it would be like to achieve them. Some words work, some don’t and some need a tweak or two. With more pause for thought, then, volia! I have them, the three words that represent the outcome of the next 12 months. My three words this tear are; Joy – this relates to loving what I do, being happy doing it, and working with fab people Prosperity – achieving my business plan targets, prosperous and giving in relationships, and sharing the prosperity with my clients and all I connect with Go To...
How to get new ideas to grow your own business

How to get new ideas to grow your own business

Is your head spinning with how much there is to do at this time of year? Not only is the year end closing in, with lots of business tasks to be completed but it’s also a crazy busy festive time, with lots of seasonal events and parties. Often at this time of year, we can experience a tension in our thinking. One pull point is that we are feeling relieved that the year is coming to an end, and we will ‘get through’ the whirl of activity, and then the opposing point is often a pressure to get into activity to get the business moving again in the new year. The great thing about tension, is that when it is released, so too is a significant amount of energy. Often though, to release the tension, a stress point occurs, enabling you to ‘break through’. Ugh! I’m all about making things easy as possible. Business is supposed to be enjoyable; to stimulate and reward, not tax and deplete. Click To Tweet So, here is an easy approach to release the tension and to generate some fresh ideas to grown your own business. How to get ‘fresh business thinking’. 1. Create a new file on your device or find a beautiful notebook. 2. Before each festive event you go to, spend some time intentionally thinking about it. Ask yourself the following questions about the event: What could I learn today that would help my business? What business concern would I love to have solved? What sort of person would I most like to meet? 3. Go and enjoy the event 4....
How small things make the biggest difference to your own business

How small things make the biggest difference to your own business

I’ve already started thinking about my new year’s resolution. I know, we haven’t even got into the final two weeks of the year, and I am jettisoning myself into 2015. Here is what has led me to my resolutions – a sense of too much change, too many bright shiny things, and frankly, not sticking at one thing long enough to see the difference. For some reason, 2014, has been a very magpie-like year for me. If you have known my journey for the last 18 months you could probably understand why. However, 2015 promises to be a year of relative stability! So ….drumroll please- – my 2015 resolution is to do small things every day to achieve big change. When I have focused in such a simple way in the past, it has worked. Worked for me in that I have gained: More clarity More confidence Calm Increased traction in my business Better financial results When I dart from here to there, then my results reflect that. I feel constantly on the treadmill, always looking over my shoulder for the next big thing, and seeking more external validation than ever before. These are not supportive habits to grow a business. Clarity, confidence and commitment will help you start and expand your business. Click To Tweet The three small things I will do everyday are: –       Meditate – to give me calm, clarity and congruence in my thinking –       Imagine – reflect on my goals (personal and business) and rehearse them coming to fruition –       Thrive – do something I love! This could be coffee with a friend, a beautiful...
Why launching a business is like getting a jumbo jet off the runway

Why launching a business is like getting a jumbo jet off the runway

Here I am sitting in the plane about to take off from Sydney to Dubai. I always love that moment of huge acceleration …that moment when you are thrust back in your seat as the plane accelerates faster and faster, gaining momentum as it is about to launch into flight. That moment is incredible! Getting a massive bulk of metal, passengers and luggage off the tarmac into the air is an amazing feat, which seems to defy the laws of gravity. Then, only minutes later, we hear the ‘ping’, the seat belt sign is extinguished and we are now gliding through the air, cruising at the altitude designed for maximum efficiency and comfort. There is a lot of similarity between a plane taking off and starting a business. If you think about the pre- flight check and preparation needed before you take off and then the immense quantities of fuel required to get the plane off the ground that is exactly the same as launching a business. The planning, setting of a destination, and the time, energy and effort to get a business of the ground calls on your personal resources of resilience, perseverance and imagination. A massive investment of your inner reserves not to mention your financial reserves. Whether you are launching a new business, or a new offering for your existing business, you still need to put in an enormous effort. The benefit of this is not just the ‘launch’ of the business or the new offering, but it is also the impetus it gives you. Setting a deadline harnesses your resources and focuses you to work...
Kill Your Dead Time – Thrive! TV Tips

Kill Your Dead Time – Thrive! TV Tips

I have never met a bored business owner We all have growing to do lists, and not enough time to do them. We are always busy and want to have more than 24 hours in a day. So much time can be wasted by switching between different types of tasks and by commuting times to meeting. This is dead time. Because, not only does your brain need to switch a gear when you are transitioning between tasks, but you also need to shift your energy. And lets be honest, sometimes we struggle to find the energy to create, and other times we can’t stop ourselves. Or maybe you are an early morning person and that I the best time for you to create or to crunch numbers. Personally, I love to write in the morning. I have a clear head, my mind is free, the house is quiet and I can write… but in the late afternoon, it is much harder. So if you want to be more productive – kill your dead time now! Start to observe when the best time of day is for you, or even which day in the week to do certain tasks on. Start to schedule all the similar activities that match your energy flow the best and see what difference it makes. So it might be that you have Monday mornings for writing proposals and research, Monday afternoon for email processing, Tuesday for client meetings etc. Your Action:   Start to notice how you feel about doing certain tasks on certain days and times. Then devise a new schedule that more closely...
Five Essential Steps To Get Control In Your Business

Five Essential Steps To Get Control In Your Business

When we leave our jobs to start our own business, it is often because we want more control over our time, who we work with and what we do. We relish the thought of being the final decision maker, and taking full responsibility for what works, and what doesn’t. Our results are all our own effort From the research I conducted last year among 300 Corporate Crossovers, they loved the freedom and flexibility that their own business gave them, and being in total control. Many of them were happy with the new balance in their lives, and felt they had the time they wanted to pursue activities outside of work. But others didn’t. They felt their business consumed them, and that all boundaries were blurred between their work and personal time. So what’s the secret formula to ensure you gain control over your life and work, and create the right mix of the two in your life? Here are five essential steps to get started: Step 1: Design Your Life! Take some time out to think about the life you want to create when you run a business. Do you want to work three days a week, or maybe five days but from 10 – 3? You have an opportunity to create the life you want, so think about what that could look like. Step 2: Draw up Boundaries What are your non-negotiables? Will you work late into the evening but draw the line at working weekends? Will you commit to attending a gym class on Wednesday morning, that nothing will get in the way of? Creating and sticking...

Guest Post: Free Tele-Summit ‘Is Your Website Legal?’

You have had the amazing idea for your business, splashed out a small fortune on a shiny new website or simply spent hours yourself creating it. The website is now open to the world, but is it legal? Did you even know that it had to be legal?  The answer is a big YES!! There are serious fines and implications if you do not comply with certain laws and have some key information on your website and stationery. This is regardless of whether you sell or not. For instance, if your website is not legal, you risk: Up to £500,000 fine and possible imprisonment for data protection offences A so-called “Stop Now Order” from The Office of Fair Trading and other enforcement agencies which as the name suggests, means stop business, NOW!  Stop NOW!! Copyright Brian Snelson Being asked by the courts to publish corrective statements to eliminate the continuing effects of past infringements. Bad publicity for your business as many punishments are broadcast on the enforcement agencies’ websites None of this is good for business and absolutely gutting when you have put so much time and effort into your website and all in good faith too. Most website developers are not aware of these laws either. Lest you break out in a cold sweat, fear not as I will be revealing exactly what you need to be legal and how to do it as part of a special FREE tele-summit for entrepreneurs hosted by Wendy Kerr of Corporate Crossovers on 17th Sept 2013 at 1pm. You simply register and then sit back and listen to the interviews from the comfort of your own office! There...
Learn To Love The Numbers In Your Business – Thrive! TV Tips

Learn To Love The Numbers In Your Business – Thrive! TV Tips

So many business owners I meet say ‘I hate the number’,  ‘I hate looking at my financials’ – ‘I would rather have root canal than create a profit and loss statement’. If you are running a business and you don’t review your numbers weekly, then you are not running a business, it is an expensive hobby. You must get knowledge of how your business is tracking, how much money you are bringing in, what you are spending and how much is left over. You also need to consider what your sales pipeline is – how much more money can I expect to make in the next month, the next 6 months. Getting into the detail will empower you and allow you to make better decisions. Your Action: Get the numbers out. Find your invoices, your receipts and start to bring them together and calculate how much you are really making. Or if you use a book keeper, ask them to provide you with the numbers and have a call with them, so they can take you through it. Who Is On Your Shoulder Keeping You Accountable?

Who Is On Your Shoulder Keeping You Accountable?

The alarm rings. Another day, another to do list. You look at it, frustrated that nothing has changed since yesterday, or last week and if you are being particularly brutal, last month. These tasks are important, otherwise they wouldn’t be on your list. So why don’t they get completed for you to move your work and business forward? Chances are you have no one keeping you accountable but you. When we worked in an organisation, we had a boss. We had other departments, external suppliers, agencies and customers to keep us on our toes and delivering to deadlines. When we go out on our own, we lose it. We have all the freedom, flexibility and control we crave. No demands or deadlines unless we want them. Sounds fantastic!!!!!! And it is, if we can be self-disciplined and motivated to get the work done. For those who find this difficult I recommend finding external accountability, just like you had in your job. Here are some ways you can get that accountability and feel the frisson to get the tasks done and off your to do list: 1. Accountability buddy Find someone you trust and respect. Set up weekly calls with them and share the tasks you must complete that week. They do the same with you. Then each week, check in with each other on your progress. Having someone you know is expecting you to complete the work gets it done. 2. External deadlines When you have to deliver work to a client, joint venture partner, or any third party, this sharpens your commitment about getting the job done on...
Boundaries In Business – Who Needs them – You DO!

Boundaries In Business – Who Needs them – You DO!

If you are like most women I know, sometimes you are not sure where your work ends and your personal time starts, if at all. And then if you have a partner, family and other commitments, life can seem to be one amorphous lump of amorphous-ness! Phew – even I got tired writing that sentence! At times it can seem as if our calendar is controlling us, even though we are the person that adds the appointments to it Bizarrely, it can feel as if we are addicted to this busy-ness. How did this craziness start and how can you get your control back? The good news is the addiction is not your fault. Blame it on the 1.5-kilogram mass of grey matter in your head. Blame it on your brain. Thousands of years ago, when we were wandering the earth as cave men and women, our brain was programmed to continually scan the environment, searching for danger. Every rustle in the bushes, each shriek from a passing carnivore, caused us to have a burst of adrenalin shoot straight into our central nervous system, readying us to run or fight. Fast forward to 2013 and whilst we may not be scared of hungry large carnivores, our brain is still using that programming from centuries ago. Your brain is still actively scanning the environment for danger and now, change. As change in your situation can represent danger. Have you watched people get off the underground trains? As soon as they reach signal, they are scanning their phone for message, as if it is essential they get that news now. This...
